About Parakeetype

Parakeetype is a free and open-source speech-to-text app for Android. It works as a voice keyboard and as a speech recognition service for the whole system.

All transcription happens entirely on your device using the Parakeet Ultra model (a further-trained version of NVIDIA's Parakeet-TDT v3) via ONNX Runtime - no audio ever leaves your phone, no account required, and the app has no internet access at all.

Features

• Speech-to-text keyboard: dictate into any text field

• Speech-to-text input service: other apps such as translators, Firefox or Duolingo can use Parakeetype for their voice input

• Very fast: the model is kept loaded in memory, so transcription starts right away

• Fully on-device inference - completely private

• Minimal permissions: no internet access required

Based on Outspoke

Parakeetype is a fork of the Outspoke app and adds new features on top of it.

Requirements

• Android 12 (API 31) or higher

• ~630 MB free storage for the model file

• The model is downloaded separately from the project's GitHub releases and imported in the app (CC-BY-4.0)

How to install Parakeetype

  1. Tap Download — the app's official page on F-Droid opens.
  2. Install it with the F-Droid app (recommended, for automatic updates), or use the download button on that page.
  3. If Android asks, allow the F-Droid app or your browser to install apps, then tap Install.
  4. Open Parakeetype from your app drawer.
