About Sun Piano

Sun Piano is an electronic piano for Android. Every sound is synthesized in real time by its own engine, so the app is small and needs no sample downloads.

Keyboard

All 88 keys, multitouch, with a mini-map to jump anywhere on the keyboard

Glissando: slide a finger across the keys to play each one

Loudness from where you touch a key

Note names as letters or Do-Re-Mi, 7 to 28 visible keys, octave buttons

Tablets held upright (Android 16 and newer) show two keyboards stacked

Sound

8 instruments: Piano, Electric Piano, Honky-Tonk, Organ, Strings, Harpsichord, Marimba, Synth Lead

24-voice polyphony, sustain pedal, stereo reverb, low-latency audio

Transpose and tuning (A4 from 415 to 466 Hz)

Practice and recording

Metronome with tempo, time signature, tap tempo and beat indicator

Record and play back what you play. Each recording keeps every note's instrument, even when you switch instruments in the middle, and the settings it was made with, such as the tuning

A Library to play, rename and delete recordings

Share and import

Share a recording as audio (.m4a), which plays on any phone or computer and in messaging apps

Share it as a standard MIDI file, with General MIDI instruments, to edit the notes in other music programs

Import MIDI files from other apps: all tracks, tempo changes and the sustain pedal, with their instruments matched to Sun Piano's sounds (drums are left out)

Connect a keyboard

USB MIDI keyboards, and Bluetooth LE MIDI keyboards found and connected from Settings (notes and sustain pedal)

A computer keyboard: Z to M and Q to U play two octaves, Space is the sustain pedal

No ads, no tracking, no internet access. Free software under the GNU GPL v3 or later.

What's new in 1.0

1.0: • Needs Android 12 or newer, and no longer asks for the location permission • New About screen: version, license and links to the source code • On phones the whole top bar fits: Settings and About are icons • Metronome: Start/Stop is next to Done, always visible on phones • A damaged settings file no longer crashes the app; it's replaced and saving works again • No stuck note when a MIDI keyboard is unplugged while playing
